Japanese Akoya pearls are saltwater pearls, cultivated in the sea in the Pinctada fucata oyster. Japan is the birthplace of cultured Akoya pearls, with a heritage extending back to the pioneering work of Kokichi Mikimoto in the late nineteenth century.

Japan's cool coastal waters allow the pearl's nacre to develop gradually, contributing to the fine nacre structure and sharp, mirror-like lustre for which high-quality Japanese Akoya pearls are renowned.
